Hello and Happy Summer to you!

BB Lounging

The staff and dolphins at DPMMR hope your summer is off to a carefree and blissful start! I am pleased to announce that we are busy! Very, very busy! Seems like the whole world is ready to travel again and get out of the house and out of town for a relaxing vacation! I am thrilled to see our number of swimmers and visitors pick up and rebound to numbers we haven’t seen since before Hurricane Irma.

IMG_9545The increase in swimmers brings DPMMR much needed revenue, which helps us fund our mission of Animal Care, Education and Outreach, Scientific Investigation, and Rescue and Rehabilitation. Our seven resident bottlenose dolphins continue to thrive and I am happy to say we continue to prioritize and focus on their health and wellbeing. Just like the staff, the dolphins do notice the sudden increase in swimmers at the facility, and the trainers do an incredible job of keeping the interactive guest sessions fun, variable, and super unpredictable for the dolphins. Happily, our dolphins tend to look forward to the sessions with our guests, as this is a very positive and reinforcing part of their day.

In other summer news, I am now teaching 3 semesters of graduate class for theIMG_0582-1 University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at DPMMR. I just completed the first Summer Session class for the UM graduate students entitled Marine Mammal Applied Behavior Analysis and Managed Care. In addition to the Spring and Summer semesters, on site at DPMMR, I am looking forward to teaching this class for the Fall semester as well.

I do hope you can make it out of the house this summer and on down to the sunny Florida Keys for a much needed getaway and dolphin swim at DPMMR! Our marine mammal family can’t wait to see you!

- Nancy ;)
